Unexpected Tonsillectomy

On August 8th we took Nicholas into American Fork Hospital to get another set of ear tubes in. He gets terrible ear infections and is super resistant to medication. While he was under our ENT came back into the room we were waiting in. That is never a good sign. He had us quite worried. We had consulted him about Nicholas' tonsils a few weeks earlier. Nicholas has terrible sleep apnea and his tonsils are huge, but we both agreed that he was too little to get them out. When the ENT came into the room he said we'd better just take his tonsils out now. They were touching while he was completely relaxed and he was perfectly healthy. He predicted another winter full of strep and tonsillitis. If you have never experienced tonsillitis, I think it's one of the scariest things ever. There isn't any treatment and they told me when Jackson had it to just call 911 if he stops breathing. Yeah, thanks. I guess I won't sleep either. :/
So the ENT suggested we take them out right then. Mike was all for it and so we signed the paper. The ENT brought his tonsils back to us while Nick was still waking up so we could see them. (there is a picture below, a warning just in case you are squeamish) p.s. we really love our ENT and have been working with him for 10 years and totally trust his judgement. He's a good guy.

It took a while, but Nicholas drank the required amount of fluids for us to come home. He did get to play in the play room and meet the therapy dog they have in the hospital. We also watched quite a few cartoons. Mike got us cafeteria lunch, since we were only planning on being there for 3 hours tops and ended up spending 9. Linda came and rescued a tired Lauren from our other kids and watched them until we got back.
It was a really hard 2 weeks. Nick didn't want to take his medicine or ear or drink. He survived mainly on chocolate milk. Eight days out he had a bleed and we were in the emergency room. It stopped on it's own so we didn't have to get it burned. We knew he was too young for this surgery and it was really tough, but it is over and he is doing much better. His sleep apnea is gone and our insurance is changing at the end of the month so I guess it was a great blessing in disguise. I'm glad we are done with that trial. I wonder if 2 kids getting their tonsils out in 1 summer is some kind of record? We have had a crazy summer.
